QUALIFICATIONS
-
Bachelors' degree in social or behavioral
sciences, criminal justice, law enforcement or related field.
-
Must complete 40 hour Basic Probation
Officer Training Academy.
-
Must complete 40 hours of in service
training per year, to include Safety Tactics Against Resistance (STAR),
oleoresin capsicum (pepper spray) defensive tactics, impact weapon tactics and
certification, First Aid and CPR certification, and may include firearms
qualifications.
-
Must be willing to relocate to Franklin
County.
WORK EXPERIENCE
- None required, but criminal justice internships or employment
preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
-
Must be able to speak and understand the
English language in order to carry out the essential functions of the
job. Ability to converse in Spanish a definite plus.

Must possess good communication and
interpersonal skills.

Must possess initiative and problem solving
skills.

Must possess the ability to function
independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with
offenders, co-workers and others.

Must possess the ability to maintain
confidentiality in regard to client information and records.

Must possess a willingness to travel as
needed to perform functions of job.

Must possess some knowledge of basic
principles and practices of social case work and the court system.
-
Must possess some knowledge of criminology
and penology.
-
Must possess the ability to work
effectively with disturbed individuals in an authoritative manner.

Must possess the technical knowledge of
operating typewriters, personal computers and other office equipment, and
to prepare related reports as required.
-
Must possess knowledge and ability to
utilize 2-way radios, handcuffs, shackles, breath testing devices and drug
testing equipment in a proper and safe manner.
-
Must have some knowledge of laws affecting
probation/parole and the ability to carry out these laws and duties within
the defined procedures of the law, including times when one must make
independent decisions.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB
- To perform a variety of entry level probation officer work and to
train to perform probation officer duties such as investigations,
counseling and supervising a caseload of offenders, and to work within the
policies and procedures of the Probation/Parole Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB
-
Provide community protection through
casework services.
-
Collect fines, costs and restitution and
assists in recording and filing of same.
-
Assists in preparing a variety of
department reports and correspondence.
-
Files documents and paperwork according to
established procedures.
-
Schedules meetings and appointments between
staff, resource personnel and probationer.
-
Assists in conducting research on missing
probationers/parolees.
-
Trains to be able to perform the following
Probation Officers' duties:
-
to conduct social case histories and
intake interviews
-
to conduct pre sentence investigations
-
to provide counseling and supportive
services to help probationers with their personal, social and economic
adjustments to the community
-
to enforce court orders and assist in
making arrests
-
to conduct pre violation hearings
-
to document and maintain notes and record
keeping in compliance with established policies, procedures and
regulations
-
to conduct Court Reporting Network
evaluations with DUI offenders
-
to maintain contact with
probationers/parolees and their supportive services
-
to impose intermediate sanctions on
probation/parole violators
-
to arrest and incarcerate probation/parole
violators
OTHER DUTIES OF JOB
-
Assists in transporting offenders to
appropriate placements.
-
Participates in on-going staff training and
techniques.
-
Interacts with other internal departments
as necessary.
-
Performs other job related duties as
required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
- Receives frequent instruction from Chief, Deputy Chief, and
Supervisors in regard to daily work duties.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
WORKING CONDITIONS
-
Works indoors in crowded space with
adequate lighting and ventilation, but with fluctuations in temperatures.
-
Works with average indoor exposure to
noise, but subject to frequent disruptions and moderate degree of stress.
-
Average indoor exposure to dust/dirt.
-
Periodically works different shifts or
works on call as needed.
-
Works daily with volatile and potentially
hostile or aggressive offenders.
-
Travels occasionally when necessary to
perform in home visits when needed or when transporting offenders or when
needed to appear at other locations or agencies.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
-
Must be able to sit for long periods
throughout the work day, with occasional pushing, pulling, standing,
walking, twisting, driving, reaching as necessary to carry out essential
job functions.
-
Requires coordinated dexterity of
fingers/hands; feet/legs; torso as necessary to carry out essential work
duties.
-
Sedentary work, with occasional
lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of ten pounds.
-
Must demonstrate emotional stability.
-
Must be able to cope with the physical and
mental stress of the position.
-
Must be able to physically and mentally
react quickly in the event of disturbance or physical outbreak.
-
Must be able to pay close attention to
details and concentrate on work.
-
Must be able to mentally react quickly to
offenders needs during supervisory sessions.
-
Must be able to work with offenders who
carry or who may carry the active hepatitis, HIV or other infectious
diseases.
-
Must possess the ability to restrain
uncontrollable offenders and to make arrests when necessary.
